It was clear from a very early age that Dr. Joe Safirstein was destined to be an orthodontist-he started helping in his father's practice at just 8 years old. But no one could have predicted that configuring servers and routers would be a part of the job description for a 21st century orthodontist.
Let us explain. From his clinics in Portland and McMinnville, Dr. Joe, as he is known to his patients, is dedicated to improving the smiles, facial profiles and self-confidence of patients ranging in age from 6 to 66+.
After earning degrees from the Universities of Florida and Tennessee and then Oregon Health & Sciences University, he took over a 50-year old practice located in the Lloyd District of Portland in 2001.
Dr. Joe quickly began a series of systematic enhancements to streamline his business and improve patient relations. These projects included adopting digital x-ray technology, digital photography, electronic patient charting, appointment scheduling and accounting-all designed to reduce paperwork wherever possible. Even letters that arrive at Dr. Joe's office are scanned directly into electronic records. These changes not only required an investment in information technologies, but also a necessary upgrade in data communications capability.
Safirstein, who handled the dual role of being 'Dr. Joe' to his patients during the day, and 'information technology manager' at night, quickly noticed a shortcoming with his telecommunications provider at the time-the upload speeds on his data service were much slower than the download speeds.
