Capital Public Radio

You'd be hard pressed to find a more dedicated and supportive fan base than Public Radio listeners. And for over a decade, Integra Telecom has helped bring the airwaves to the eager listeners of this customer.

From its origin in a cramped and dank studio in 1970 as a student-operated station on the California State University-Sacramento campus, the Capital Public Radio (CPR) network has grown to operate four FM stations with news and jazz formats, and three classical stations. Now, over 420,000 dedicated listeners tune in to CPR's arts, news, and public affairs programming each week across California's Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada.

As the region's National Public Radio affiliate, the station carries the customary line-up of NPR favorites like All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and A Prairie Home Companion, but also features local programming such as The California Report, which provides in-depth, local public policy and political watchdog coverage.

Integra Telecom is delighted to play a vital role in CPR's broadcasting efforts. Jeff Browne, CPR's Director of Engineering, talked about how a start-up telecom carrier in the mid-90's came to his attention.

"In 1996, we were desperate to find a cost-effective route that would bring the CPR signal to our Tahoe transmitter for broadcasting into the Sierra Nevada market. But the quotes from the well-known carriers were extraordinarily expensive." Given a reference from a local TV station, Browne invited Integra, a new company serving the area, to bid on the dedicated circuit.

And ever since, Integra's dedicated fiber network and last-mile solution has carried CPR's signal to listeners in its eastern market. Additional Integra services connect the station's Stockton location, too.

"Over the years, Integra has proven to be a dependable partner and continues to be so with their reasonable rates and attention to service," says Browne. "In fact, our recent studio move went smoothly, largely due to Integra's efforts."
